Digital Dementia and How to Prevent It?

Sunday November 17, 2013

After reading online about Digital Dementia, our young parishioner, Sara Lozo, decided to take an action and work on the community project for her Gold Award and spread awareness about this new disorder, which is caused by overuse of electronic devices. She says:

“The increased use of digital devices such as smart phones and tablets can contribute to the deterioration in cognitive abilities in children. Teenagers, who have become so reliant on technology, are no longer able to remember simple everyday details such as their phone numbers. Knowing that most of my friends are not aware of this problem, I want to inform them. Young kids have easy access to electronic devices at an early age. The overuse of smart phones and gaming devices hampers the balanced development of the brain, with heavy users likely to develop the left side of their brains, leaving the right side untapped or underdeveloped. A recent study showed that in 15 percent of cases, this can lead to the early onset of dementia. This is a serious issue and community needs to be aware of it.”
